Reported Train Vs Car Turns Out Better Than Expected

March 2, 2010 at 7:49 P.M. the Central Islip FD was requested to Suffolk Avenue and Carleton Avenue for a reported car that was struck by a train. First arriving Chief Ed Freudenberg was happy to report negative injuries to the male operator of the car. The Equipment train struck the front of the car and removed the entire nose of the car. FD units were on location to secure the vehicle. MTA Police were also on location to conduct their investigation. All FD units were returned to service.


 
   
   
C.I.F.D. responds to an Attic Fire

The Central Islip Fire Department responded to a structure fire called in by one of its own members. Ex Chief Birsner, while on his way home noticied smoke coming from a neighbors house. He called dispatch rite away and informed them of a working fire with a possible occupant still inside. Ex Chief Birsner then made his way into the structure to evacuate the residents. Upon arrival of the Chiefs, they were notified of a attic fire. The first arriving Engine made an aggressive attack on the fire. The fire was contained to the Attic. Due to the quick response of the C.I.F.D. the residents house was saved. The department had a full response of Five Engines, Two Rescue Trucks and a Ladder Truck. Another fatal car crash for Central Islip Volunteers

On January 28, 2010 the Central Islip Fire Department was alerted to a reported motor vehicle accident in front of 729 Wilson Boulevard at 4:46 a.m. 

Arriving units were faced with the reality of another fatal car accident. A single vehicle crash with 5 young people had rescue crews working to free them from their twisted car. Rescue 376 crews placed their Hurst tool into operation to free a young female from the rear of the car, then had the task of performing C.P.R. on her until Central Islip Hauppauge ambulance crews were on scene. All while this was taking place, other crews were securing the vehicle and tending to the other victims, one of which was ejected from the rear seats. Another victim was determined to have mortal injuries and was later pronounced dead. All victims were transported to area hospitals in serious condition. The female in trumatic arrest was later pronounced dead from her injuries in the accident.

It was later reported that the 19 year old driver of this vehicle was driving while intoxicated. The vehicle drove through the tree pictured then struck another tree.

All units were returned to service to ready their rigs for another call of service.


 
   
   
Mutual Aid on a Working Structure Fire to East Brentwood

On Wednesday January 20, 2010 the East Brentwood Fire Department requested assistance from the Central Islip, Hauppauge and Brentwood fire departments for a working fire in a 2 story private dwelling on Treemont Avenue. The Brentwood F.D. supplied one Engine, The Hauppauge F.D. Supplied the F.A.S.T team and Central Islip supplied one Engine and a truck. The crews from C.I.F.D. opened up the roof and secured the utilities. With all four departments working together, the fire was extinguished without incident.


 
   
   
Car vs Dead End

On Tuesday January 19, 2010 The C.I.F.D. responded to a reported Heavy Rescue at the end of Cedar Street in College Woods. Chief Falco and Assistant Chief McGee arrived on scene to find a one car MVA with one occupant. Chief Falco advised dispatch of a “Negative Pin” and for Rescue 6 to respond. It is unknown how the operator of the vehicle ended up on top of the 2 foot concrete wall just inches from launching into the sump. Rescue 6 secured the vehicle, the vehicle was removed from the wall and all units were up shortly thereafter.


 
   
   
Quick Stop On An Early Morning Bedroom Fire

On Saturday January 16 At 0005 Hours the C.I.F.D. was dispatched to a reported Structure fire on Wheeler Road across from the Central Islip High School. First arriving unit Engine 3 went on scene with light smoke showing. After a quick evacuation of the residents, the Engine crew advanced the hose line into the structure. At this time the Engine 3 Officer advised the Incident Commander of a bedroom fire on the first floor. Second due Engine, Engine 2 secured a water source to Engine 3.  The Hook and Ladder company preformed the vent on the number 3 side. Engine 1 acted as the fast team while Engine 8 and Rescue 6 were on stand by for a possible additional alarm. The fire was extinguished and all units returned to their respective stations.

 
   
   
Mutual Aid to East Brentwood F.D.

On Friday afternoon the C.I.F.D. was dispatched to assist the East Brentwood Fire Department with multiple car fires to the rear of a dwelling on Bushwick Avenue. Chiefs Falco, McAteer and Mcgee along with Engine 2 responded. The crew of Engine 2 assisted in stretching a second hose line off of E.B.F.D. Engine 3-3-3. The fire was extinguished without incident.


 
   
   
Working Structure Fire

On Thursday January 07, the Central Islip Fire Dept. responded to a reported Structure fire on Ferndale Blvd. between Fig and Banana streets. Upon arrival Chief Falco  transmitted the“ Signal 35 “. The incoming units were advised that the structure was a 2 story private dwelling with fire on the first and second floors with unknown occupants. The first due Engine, Engine 1 was instructed to pick up the hydrant and stretch a line to the front door. The second due Engine, Engine 2 pulled to the front of the building and stretched a backup line. Crews along with Assistant Chief McAteer made entry into the structure to perform searches and fire suppression. The fire on the first floor was quickly knocked down and the line advanced to the second floor. At this time Engine 3, Rescue 6 and 18 assisted in the searches and securing the utilities. As the attack line was making its way to the second floor conditions were deteriorating, at this time a vent of the number 1 side windows was called for, the vent was made as the fire was being extinguish, it was a textbook operation. (  Please view photos and a short video of the vent ). All searches proved negative and the fire was put under control a short time after.

C.I. responds to an Overturn

The Central Islip Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Carleton Avenue and Sunburst drive for a reported overturn with entrapment. Upon arrival of 3-7-30, the overturn was confirmed with negative persons trapped. 3-7-33 and Heavy Rescue unit 3-7-6 secured both vehicles while Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance tended to two patients. The scene was put under control and all units returned to service.


 
   
   
Pinned Driver Requires Hurst Tool Operation

November 30, 2009 at 9:17 PM the Central Islip Fire Department responded to a reported motor vehicle accident at 106 Saint Johns Street. Arriving units confirmed a male victim that was pinned with injuries in a mini van. Rescue 3-7-18 placed their tool into operation to free the male. Suffolk Police ESU also assisted with their tool in the operation to remove the roof of the van. Central Islip Hauppauge EMS crews were on location treating the victim, which suffered non life threating injuries. Once the male was extricated, the scene was placed under control. All units were returned to service once the vehicles involved were secured.


 
   
   
C.I.F.D. Responds to multiple Heavy Rescues

On Monday morning the C.I.F.D. responded to two motor vehicle accidents, the first one at the intersection of Vets Highway and Suffolk Avenue and the second one located on the Long Island Expressway. Pictures shown are from the first alarm. Both MVA'S turned out to be negative persons trapped. C.I.F.D. units secured all vehicles and returned to service.


 
   
   
Heavy Smoke on Arrival

On Saturday Afternoon the C.I.F.D. was dispatched to a structure fire with reports of heavy smoke coming from the dwelling. Upon arrival of Asst. Chief McAteer a " smoke showing " was transmitted. Chief Falco then advised the First due Engine (3-7-4) to pick up the hydrant and drop a supply line. The truck company (3-7-5) located the fire which was in the boiler room. The fire was contained to the boiler room. The remaining Crews vented and secured the structure. The town Fire Marshal was notified and all units returned to service shortly after.


 
   
   
Electrical Fire for CIFD

On November 23, 2009 at 11:11 AM, Central Islip FD responded to a reported structure fire with smoke on the 2nd and 3rd floors. First arriving Chiefs an electrical fire in the wall on the second floor. Arriving Engine, 3-7-2 was ordered to nose into a hydrant while their crew entered the home to isolate the issue. Rescue 3-7-6 also made the assignment and provide manpower for the alarm. All units were returned to service once the home was rendered safe.


 
   
   
C.I.F.D. Responds to an MVA

Saturday afternoon at approximately 13:00 hours the Central Islip Fire Department responded to a Motor Vehicle Accident at the Intersection of Carleton Avenue and Clayton Street. Units arrived on scene to find a two car MVA with one occupant trapped. Rescue 6 put the Jaws of Life into operation and along with the assistance from the Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance Corps extricated the patient  from the vehicle without incident. Both vehicles were secured and Chief of Department Phil Falco released all units shortly thereafter.

 
   
   
Fuel spill requires the Islip Town Haz-mat Team

The Central Islip Fire Department responded to a fuel spill in front of 38 West Suffolk Avenue on the morning of November 22, 2009. Upon arrival of Chief of Department Phil Falco a 250 gallon home heating oil tank was found on the side of the road with an active leak. Engine 2 and Rescue 6 arrived on scene shortly after and controlled the leak and the spill. At that time Chief Falco requested the assistance of the Town of Islip Haz-Mat Team. Upon arrival of team leader Mike Delgado, a full team response was requested. Haz-Mat 10 along with the team successfully offloaded approximately 50 gallons of fuel oil without incident. All units were back in service at 10:27 Hours.
